Best infantry unit bannerlord.
At least in my opinion, infantry are kinda shit at field battles right now. They get trampled easily by cavalry as soon as the cavalry hit their formation, and pelted easily by archers before they can even get close enough to deal damage. In battles where there are no horses though, infantry with shields are very strong.
Shock infantry - imperial manevilions, Sturgian breakers, Aserai guards, essentially all units with big enough sticks or axes are built to be anti-cav. While not really a tactic on its own they absolutly shred melee cavalry. Shield wall + archers - get shield infantry and archers, surround your archers with the shields.Top 3 Best Troops: Khuzait Darkhan. A good versatile spear infantry. Going 50/50 linebreakers/spearmen is a great Infantry block. And druz champs are great cav that are one of the best seige units when dismounted. I wouldn't normally use sturgian archers but if you're going 100% sturgian units I might try using some archers. With a proper captain, and banner they will probably still smash. Aserai infantry is a dark horse pick. Insane armor, good shields, and throwing weapons. However, their swords make them atrocious in melee against top tier units. Low tiers they fare very well, due to their insane armor preventing them from taking much damage or any stagger, which prevents them from attacking.
I like them to be able to operate on any battlefield and the Sturgian Druzhinnik Champion is that unit. It's got better armour than the Bannerknight and better weapons than the Cataphract (counched lances are the best lances). Battanian troops mostly sucked except for their Fians which hard carried them to being a pretty strong faction. Battanian Fians were best archers, Imperial Legionaries were best infantry, Vlandian Banner Knight were best melee cavalry, but Khuzait Khan Guard were basically almost as good in melee while also being amazing in ranged.

Infantry only is perfectly viable provided you make sure you keep enough mounts in your inventory to keep your speed up, too many will slow you down so about 1 per soldier does the trick. Sumpters, Mules and Camels don't increase the speed of your party, but they increase your carry capacity by 100 each. All other horses increase your carry capacity by 20, but also increase your party speed as your infantry can ride horses on campaign map. As far as I know, speed of the horses is irrelevant.
